Mapping Current State of Day-to-Day Operations of Direct Patient Care

The project proposed is to process map patient journeys for 3 types of encounters (AN/pregnancy visit, chronic disease management, urgent care), experienced at Women’s College Hospital Family Practice Health Centre.

Potential for Engineering Student involvement
1. Work with the health care team to determine time frame, locations, and data collection methods.
2. Data collection, ‘walk’ the patient journey, pathway determination for each of AN/pregnancy visit, chronic disease management, urgent care
3. Create map, infer reasons for missing data, analysis.
4. Pathway redesign and develop protocols.

Special competencies for the student
Experience collecting and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data. Research experience is helpful, but not necessary. Maintain strict confidentially of patient information.

Examining Provider Reported Safety Issues in Primary Care

Women’s College Hospital Family Practice Health Centre is currently undergoing a change in our model of care. As the change process unfolds, areas needing improvement will be assessed.

Potential for Engineering Student involvement
1. Work with the health care team to determine data collection methods for the model of care.
2. Data collection of patient safety, cost/resource utilization, patient/provider satisfaction.
3. Preliminary analysis of a data
4. Identify areas needing improvement.

Special competencies for the student
Experience collecting and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data. Intermediate excel. Research experience is helpful, but not necessary. Maintain strict confidentially of patient information.
