Quebec hospitals keep emergency room patients waiting longer than anywhere else in the Western world, according to a report by the province’s independent health watchdog.

In a scathing final briefing before his position is abolished by Quebec’s Health Minister, Health and Welfare Commissioner Robert Salois found 35 per cent of emergency room visitors spend more than five hours waiting to see a doctor — while next door in Ontario, only 15 per cent of patients are delayed that long.

One in 10 ER visitors in the province leaves the hospital without seeing a doctor, according to the report.
